As a photographer, you can have all the techniques in the world but unless you have a vision, unless you can see what you want and pluck it out of the air and slam it down on the negative or inside the camera you ain't got nothing. Technique will get you great looking pictures which are dry and lifeless. A vision will get you pictures which sing and dance and leap with life and joy. You have to be immersed in your art. Live and breath it and be it. See what you want, see it in your mind and then grab it. It will take time but when you have the shot you will have something so fucking beautiful its unbelievable.
That is my philosophy, that is how I shoot.

If you'd like to use my work in your newspaper, magazine, book, website, etc., then please contact me, specifying which pictures you are interested in and the usage required. Artists and performers are especially welcome to use my work for their documentary or promotional materials, usually on a credit only basis. The purpose of the credit is firstly to correctly attribute and protect authorship of the work. Secondly to enable people that like my work to find the other work that produce. And thirdly to protect against the potential problems with orphan works legislation (aka the Gowers Report) currently threatening working photographers today. If you credit the photos then more people can find my work and that means I get more work and that means you get more photos. People that credit my work get my special attention, people that don't I don't shoot anymore. Simple, eh!

One of the other things I do is web development. Though I am not a designer by trade, but more of a programmer. Therefore sites that I build, tend to be functional and usable rather than pretty. But there is beauty in form and I much rather come to a site and know how to get around without too much effort.
This site is written in php and uses a variety of technologies...
- PHP - the core technology behind the site, I've used includes to create a template based structure. Additionally, most of the RSS fed navbar on the left is post-written from javascript after the page has loaded to speed up display time and get around feed errors that occur from time to time.
- Magpie RSS - (also using Snoopy) the data feeds that make up the left navbar are processed locally using Magpie RSS, I have modified some of the cache code to respond differently depending on the data source.
- phpFlickr - (also using PEAR) is the interface to the Flickr API, virtually none of the photos on this website exist on the server. They are all hosted at Flickr and this site acts as a display interface. Caching speeds up the API calls, so the only delay should be how well the Flickr photo servers are feeling...
- lightbox JS - the gallery pages have been converted to this intuitive javascript display system, the pictures are hosted on Flickr as mentioned above.
- del.icio.us - all the sites I bookmark get tagged on del.icio.us. Another couple of RSS feeds pull down the relevant data.
- miscellanous javascript - to validate form emails, post-write javascript, provide 'whats this' popdowns, display encode email, etc. etc.
